Week 11

I learned quite a bit this lab. They were fairly easy to do since we just had to follow the directions. I was especially interested in the modelling and may go back and do some more of that. The 3D was pretty fun too!! I did the flying one so I got to rotate and fly around the map. The output was a .wrl file so I did not post it assuming it would not work. Is there anyway to save them as .mpg or something of the sort?

Week 9

This map seemed pretty easy to make and I really didn't run into any problems. It was neat playing with the different overlays and I didn't know there were different kinds of buffers either.

Quiz Questions:
Q1. I used the symmetrical difference overlay and the new layer included all the buffer areas except for those that overlaped. So the areas that we ended up with in the Union overlay were the areas not present in the symmetrical differences overlay
Q2. I used the erase overlay so that it erases the conservation areas from the possible camping areas.
Q3. There were 79 features. The largest one had an area of 7765034 m^2 and the smallest had an area of 748.11 m^2.

Week 10

This was fairly straight forward. I really didn't have any problems with it. I learned that there is tons that can be done on the table to help analyze maps which is pretty cool and can be very useful!!

Week 7: Data Editing

This map was cool to do. I am enjoying learning how to insert data because I will likely be doing a lot of it within the next year. I really didn't have any problems but it was bugging me that the shapes were not always square but I guess that is my fault. Human error :-(

Week 6: Geotransformations

Geotransformed Map

I am glad to have learned this as I can see how it will be a very handy skill!! One thing I did have a problem with was the first time I did it, the scale was for some reason not linked to the map scale. In fact I couldn't type in the scale like normal so I had to start over. I think it may have either been due to me adding all three layers at the same time but am not sure. Anyway, here are my total RMS error values:

*North Map - 1st order = 8.00246
South Map - 1st order = 31.99860
South Map - 2nd order = 11.95450
*South Map - 3rd order = 8.86964

Week 5: Bradford County, FL

Land Cover Map

This map focuses primarily on land cover. It also shows main roads and rivers. One issue I had with making this was that the land cover raster file had too many different bins/classes to fit in the ledgend. For this reason I went through and deleted some that were aquatic and wetland oriented since those are seen by vector files present in the map. Still, it may have produced some areas that are not coverd by either. With the land cover data, I am worried that it may appear too busy but I think for all of the data that is on there it is displayed rather clear and simplistic. Also, the shape of the county caused my map to have alot of empty space which isn't exactly great.

Quadrats Map

In this map I used the quads to display the DOQQ, DEM, and DRG files. After having issues finding the DEM (for quads) and the DRG files, I finally found some that worked. One thing I would like to learn how to do is how to clip a raster file using a vector file. Not sure if this is possible, but it would be nice to just have the maps in the county rather than across its border. I also threw in the rivers and roads along with some other layers to add to the map and help in determining position.

Week 4

Coordinate Projections

I am not sure if you wanted us to post this so I figured I would just in case. I really did not have much trouble with this one and it was very interesting. I learned I had been misusing the word datum with previous GPS related activities. Other than that, it is a good and useful thing to know that will take some more familiarization but will pay off by saving time.

Week 3

Map 1

Glad we finally learned the legends!! I was messing around with them in the cartography assignment but couldn't figure them out. Other than that it was fairly straight forward with no problems.

Map 2

This map was showed me how easily you can clutter up a map. Also, it was interesting to see the difference in speed of updating the screen with all the layers and lines everywhere. Other than that though, no major problems. I was trying to think of a better way to display the city names but with all the clutter around the city I could not.

Map 3

This one was my favorite!!! I'm going to be using DEM with my thesis so I was enjoying playing with this map. Anyway, the biggest trouble on this map was finding a good way to display the names of the small countries in Central America. I finally just shrunk them down so they would fit better but left Mexico and the United States large.

Week 2 Lab

This is the map showing the population of the earth by country. Higher populations are in red and lower ones in green. One thing that would have been nice to add to the map is the population values of each bin color. The only problems I had was changing the sizes and fonts of the writing. I thought that I could zoom in using the map tools but it turns out you can still zoom in on the map in the layout view.

Module 1

Deliverable 1:

This map I really did not have any problems with. The only minor pitfall that occurred was I had not turned on one of the layers and therefore could not find the feature on the map until I realized that. Other than that, finding the attributes and features was not too bad.

Deliverable 2:

This map I enjoyed more than the others as it went more in depth and I saw what GIS is capable of. There were a few places that had missed selecting something due to flipping back and forth between ArcMAP and the ESRI sight so I had to double back and find what I missed. Also, I kept forgetting how to deselect. But I have that down now!!!
